Gibson Resale Value

The body is made of highly flamed maple, absolutely gorgeous. And most of all, there is a detail we have never encountered on a Country Club: The sound post connects top and back, giving the guitar a greater rigidity, to avoid feedback problems when played really loud. No heavy dings, no heavy wear. The binding deterioration, so common on ’60 Gretsches, was becoming a real problem on the guitar’s body, since it just could not be stopped in any way. So, instead of keeping on touching it up by replacing the damaged pieces one at a time, we have chosen to ask our luthier Salvatore Mancuso to complety restore it. The restoration job is just perfect, since Mancuso has used exactly the same material, dimentions and colour of the original binding. More rare details make of this guitar a true “collector’s item”: Rare and interesting indeed!

Gibson and Martin guitars both have their place, they are famous for different things. The Martin guitar is the original dreadnaught. The D and D are the dreds upon which all others are judged. Orville and Orville by Gibson Guitars Named after the founding father of Gibson guitars, Orville H. Gibson, these fully-authorized Japanese guitars came into existence through partnerships between Gibson USA and various Japanese manufacturers and dealers such as Aria, Matsumoku and Yamano Music that extend back into the s. It wasn’t until when Yamano Gakki took over the distribution of Gibson and Korean-made Epiphone guitars in Japan, and later in , decided to expand their lineup of guitar models, that things really got rolling for the Orville and Orville by Gibson brands.

Yamano Gakki decided to go with a different name for this expanded line of guitars, that were designed in the exact form of the most valuable and sought-after classic Gibson guitars. It was decided upon to use “Orville” as the new brand name, dedicating the brand to the founding father. As it was decided that some of these guitars would be equipped with Japanese-made pickups and some with USA-made pickups, they decided to include the post-script “by Gibson” for the models that had pickups of American origin.

To state the obvious – acoustic guitar strings are strings that go on an acoustic guitar. However, acoustic guitar strings use copper based alloys 1 while electric guitar strings use nickel and steel. Copper is a better metal for preserving the tone of an acoustic instrument while nickel works better with electric guitar pickups.

You may get a bit more output if you use nickel based strings in conjunction with a soundhole pickup like the L. Dozens of manufacturers make acoustic guitar strings, from giant brands down to small boutique shops. An alloy is a mixture of metals or a mixture of a metal and another element from Wikipedia.

This adhesive, used on Golden-Era instruments, is thought to better transfer sound than modern glue. Subjected to fingerpicking, the J Vintage is just as responsive to a gentle touch as it is to a forceful attack—the notes ring together with great clarity in standard tuning as well as DADGAD, open-G, and even open-C. No matter the tuning, the guitar never tends toward murkiness, and its warm resonance and dynamic nature make everything from ragtime to Celtic fare pleasurable to run through.

The moderately large C shaped neck is easy to zip around on, thanks to low action and softened fingerboard edges, which also give the guitar a broken-in feel.

As the tag on this guitar might imply, this relative newcomer to the prestigious Gibson range takes a backwards glance to the golden era of acoustic guitar manufacture and bears a distinct yesteryear vibe in the process. The hand-applied nitrocellulose finish is perhaps not quite so shiny as some modern acrylics, but any lack of a mirror-like gleam only adds to the overall vintage vibe, in my opinion.

The shaping of the rosewood bridge is another nod to the past in that this particular design was only found on a few models dating from the period. So plenty to keep the purists happy down this end of the guitar, then! Back and sides are made from mahogany, its grain pattern all but lost underneath the darkish finish but from what I can see from holding the guitar body up to a strong light source, everything here appears to be in order and neatly finished.

The dovetailed neck is mahogany, too, and it looks like a one-piece affair with a rounded C to D profile. There, we find the older style Gibson logo amidst the unbound front face — very plain, but effective. There are a few modern touches in that the nut and bridge saddle are both made from Tusq as opposed to bone which would have almost certainly been used on the originals. All this adds up to a guitar that is aimed straight at enthusiasts for the bygone age of Gibson acoustics. As you would expect with this particular body size, the sound is big, woody and with good bass projection.

In fact, strummed chords reveal a good amount of clarity and separation. Fingerstyle blues works well — that clarity and separation really coming to the fore, firing up some true Delta spirit as it does so. Well, you know I mentioned Mr Gilmour earlier?
